Undergraduates planning to write a (senior) thesis or complete a research project in any field are eligible to apply for a Student Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). Each student must have a faculty mentor and have a well developed proposal.
Faculty mentors must not send a vita longer than two pages. They should not include the faculty mentor cover sheet provided by SURF or that will count as one of the pages. Mentors should indicate on their vita the name and field of the student being mentored. Students must include a budget explanation and a work time-line. Faculty members who are nine-month appointment may receive $1,000 salary. Indicate that they will pay $148 fringe and receive $852. There are no matching funds for this. Twelve-month faculty should request their funds through materials, supplies, and travel. With the mentor salary, the maximum request is $3900 ($1000 for mentor and $2900 for student) for the period from January 1 through October 31, 2008.
Important Note:
Funding will not begin this year until January. If you are graduating in May, then your funding must end in May. You may pay yourself $6.25 per hour for up to 12.5 hours per week. Applications must be turned into the Office of Post-Graduate Fellowships by 4:30 p.m. in the Honors College Office (ADMN 418). Applications sent directly to SURF will not receive matching funds from the University of Arkansas.Eligibility:
- be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, or national
- currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior
- have a cumulative minimum 3.25 GPA
