Applying for National Fellowships

The monetary rewards and recognition for national awards can be enormous, but applications require substantial time commitments and competition can be intense.

What can you do to become more competitive?

  • Plan ahead.
  • Check out campus and foundation information found here.
  • Get on the UofA fellowship listserv.
  • Attend one of our application writing workshops.
  • Read the successful applications we have on file.
  • Write and re-write your essays.
  • Proofread carefully.
  • Ask for letters of recommendation at least three weeks in advance.
  • Provide faculty with successful letters of recommendation for your specific scholarship (our office has examples).
  • Check deadlines carefully. Many scholarships require that student applications be submitted by our office. These scholarships have a campus deadline. Contact our office no later than a month before the campus deadline.
  • Visit the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards early and often.
